- Abstract:
-
Management Area Prescription polygons from National Forest and Grassland Management Plans in the USFS Rocky Mountain Region (Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
The Plans include specific direction on how to manage different land areas (called management areas). Each management area has a certain emphasis that will direct management activities on that piece of land and contains standards and guidelines that are published in the Plan. Generally speaking, management area codes run on a continuum from least evidence of disturbance (codes 1.xx) to most evidence of disturbance (8.xx).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Individual Forest Management Plans need to be consulted for what the codes mean in the context of the respective Forest Plan.
- Purpose:
-
IMPORTANT NOTE: Individual Forest Management Plans need to be consulted for what the codes mean in the context of the respective Forest Plan.
Thunder Basin: This data set was developed to meet legal requirements for mapping management areas during Forest Plan revisions, and for use in landscape and project planning on the forest for as long as the 2001 Plan remains in effect.
Routt: This data set was developed to meet legal requirements for mapping management areas during Forest Plan revisions, and for use in landscape and project planning on the forest for as long as the 1997 Plan remains in effect.
Nebraska: Developed during the Northern Great Plains Planning effort. This data was originally created at the district level and some attributes may have been modified so that the coverages could be appended to the forest wide level.
Medicine Bow: This data set was developed to meet legal requirements for mapping management areas during Forest Plan revisions, and for use in landscape and project planning on the forest for as long as the 2003 Plan remains in effect.
GMUG: Project and Forest level planning, and any other application requiring the spatial location of management areas.
Cimmaron and Comanche: Spatial data used in: 1) Producing reference map products; 2) Project analysis.
Arapaho: Management Areas are used to determine management direction from the Forest Plan
- Supplemental_Information:

The management area prescription file is the one gathered from the forest GIS coordinators during January - March of 1999. With appropriate revisions added in 2009. No code definitions were sent with the digital files.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Individual Forest Management Plans need to be consulted for what the codes mean in the context of the respective Forest Plan.
Below are some notes that accompanied the origional data sets:
1. from the 2001 Thunder Basin National Grassland Revised Land and Resource Management Plan was part of the Northern Great Plains Plan Revisions. These management areas correspond to Alternative 3 in the Final Environmental Impact Statement. Thunder Basin management areas have inclusion management areas.
2. from the 1997 Routt National Forest Revised Land and Resource Management Plan. These management areas correspond to Alternative C in the Final Environmental Impact Statement. This feature layer must be displayed in conjunction with the other Routt management area feature classes to obtain a complete representation of the management areas for the forest, and this feature layer contains inclusion management areas.
3. Nebraska: Developed during the Northern Great Plains Planning effort.
4. Medicine Bow: Management Area Prescription polygons from the 2003 Medicine Bow National Forest Revised Land and Resource Management Plan. These management areas correspond to Alternative D (FEIS) in the Final Environmental Impact Statement. This feature layer must be displayed in conjunction with the other Medicine Bow management area feature classes to obtain a complete representation of the management areas for the forest, and this feature layer contains inclusion management areas.
5. Grand Mesa Uncompahgre Gunnison (GMUG): Management Area Boundaries from the 1991 Amendment to the Land and Resource Management Plan for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests 4/8/2009 Update.
6. Cimmaron and Comanche: Management Areas for the Cimarron and Comanche Natioinal Grasslands
7. Arapaho: This dataset represents Management Areas for the Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest.
Included below are SAMPLE definitions from the file supplied by
the San Juan/Rio Grande forest and the Grand Mesa Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) forests.:

mgt_area.doc 8/25/98
Mgt_area cover is double-precision, utm zone 13. It contains forest plan
management area prescriptions for the San Juan-Rio Grande National Forests. It
includes the Wilderness Management Direction signed by Forest Supervisor Jim
Webb 8/3/98.
Sources: Created from mgtarea_1297 (SJ), f_rgaltg (RG) and alt_all (PWong
cover in recmgt). Forest and wilderness boundaries are from cartographic
feature files. Private boundaries have not been changed from the original
covers and may not accurately reflect the location and ownership of the land.
Mgtarea item contains different management area codes for the SJ and RG.
Codes specific to th San Juan:
mgtarea Definition
01A Developed recreation areas, including existing and proposed campgrounds and picnic grounds.
01B Ski area sites, existing and potential.
02A Semi-primitive motorized recreation areas.
02B Rural and roaded natural recreation areas.
03A Semi-primitive non-motorized recreation areas.
04B Wildlife habitat management areas.
05B Wildlife winter ranges.
06B Grassland production areas for livestock grazing.
07E Wood-fiber and sawtimber production areas.
10A Research natural areas.
10C Special archeological areas.
10D National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, eligible rivers.
Codes for the RG, and SJ wilderness areas:
1.11 Wildeness, pristine
1.11A Wilderness, pristine, high-elevation basins within the Weminuche Wilderness that are destination areas and the user-defined, non-system travel corridors leading to them.
1.12 Wilderness, primitive
1.13 Wilderness, semi-primitive
1.5 National River System, wild rivers designated and eligible
2.2 Research natural areas
3.1 Special interest areas. Emphasis on use or interpretation
3.3 Backcountry
3.4 National River System, scenic rivers designated and eligible
4.21 Scenic byways or railroads
4.3 Dispersed recreation
4.4 National River System, recreation rivers designated and eligible
5.11 General forest and rangelands, forest vegetation emphasis
5.13 Forest production
5.41 Deer and elk winter range
5.42 Bighorn sheep
6.6 Grassland resource production
8.22 Ski-based resorts, existing and potential
Some primary management areas contain secondary management area inclusions. For instance a research natural area within pristine wilderness would have mgtarea_main = 1.11 and mgtarea_incl1 = 2.2. mgtarea would contain the value 1.11 /2.2.
GMUG: Here are the present management area descriptions for the GMUG:
1A - Developed Recreation Sites.
1B - Downhill skiing and winter sports.
1D - Utility corridors and electronic sites.
2A - Semi-primitive motorized recreation opportunities.
2B - Roaded Natural and rural recreation opportunities.
3A - Semi-primitive non-motorized recreation opportunities.
4B - Wildlife habitat management for one or more management indicator species.
4D - Aspen management.
5A - Big game winter range in non-forested areas.
5B - Big game winter range in forested areas.
6A - Livestock grazing - improve forage composition.
6B - Livestock grazing - maintain forage composition.
7A - Timber management on slopes under 40%.
8 - (See Below).
8A - Pristine wilderness setting.
8B - Primitive wilderness setting.
8C - Semi-primitive wilderness setting.
9A - Riparian area management.
10A - Research Natural Areas.
10C - Special Interest Areas, Cultural Areas, and National Natural Landmarks.
10E - Municipal watersheds.
Those areas with the code '8' are areas that were designated as either wilderness or areas to be managed as wilderness in the 1993 Colorado Wilderness Bill. These areas include (on Gunnison National Forest)
- extension of Ragged's Wilderness,
- creation of Powderhorn and Fossil Ridge Wilderness
on Uncompahgre National Forest
- extension of Uncompahgre Wilderness
- creation of Roubideau and Tabeguache areas
As of 1999, forest plans have not been amended to reflect these changes, however, the areas are being managed as wilderness. In the management area coverage these areas have been designated with the code '8'.
Note: private land ("NONFS", "PVT" or is <Null>) is not current with ALP ownership and should not be used to accurately reflect ownership. Forest boundary, wilderness boundary, special area boundaries, recreation management area boundary all are not current with ALP.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Individual Forest Management Plans need to be consulted for what the codes mean in the context of the respective Forest Plan.
