Geographic Information Systems
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system that integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. Data, reports and maps produced through GIS are used by managers and resource specialists to make decisions about land management activities on National Forests and Grasslands.
Working Data
Forest Supervisors maintain GIS data for various features on the ground. This “working” data is changed and updated frequently as ground conditions change, management decisions are made, or more accurate information is obtained. For the most current data please contact the local Forest (NF) or Grassland (NG).

Published Data
The datasets available on this site are “snapshots” of the working data described above. As a public service, the Regional Forester collects annual snapshots of the most requested datasets. Please be aware that the datasets do not represent the most current data, but should be thought of as a published map that displays the best available data as of the published date. This date, and other information about each individual dataset, can be found in a “metadata” file.
