2009 MOON WALK SCHEDULE

RAPID CITY, SD: MARCH 27, 2009

The Black Hills National Forest will offer five Moon Walks in 2009. Moon Walks will start at 7:00 pm beginning in May - with the final walk ending in September. For questions regarding the Moon Walks, contact Amy Ballard (605) 343-1567.

May 9 – Civilian Conservation Corps: A Legacy of Good Works from Tough Economic Times
This walk is located in the southern Black Hills near Bob Marshall Camp. Learn about Marshall’s conservation efforts in the Hills and the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps and their contributions to facilities in this area.

June 6 – Rockerville Flume
This walk is located at the Spring Creek trail head below Sheridan Lake. A forest archaeologist will discuss the history, construction, and operation of the 20 mile 1880 Flume and placer mining in the area. Visitors will walk on the flume bed and through tunnels on the trail.

July 11 – The Underground Wilderness
This walk is located in the southern Black Hills. Visitors will learn about the limestone formation in the Hills that creates caves, the habitat caves provide, diseases threatening bats, and safety considerations when exploring caves.

August 8 – Meeker Ranch Homestead
This walk is located south of Custer. Visitors will learn about early day homesteaders, efforts to preserve this area and a partnership with the Rocky Mtn Elk Foundation to provide elk habitat on the old homestead.

September 5 – Bald Eagles
This walk is located at Deerfield Reservoir west of Hill City. Visitors will learn about the management, biology and habitat needs of a unique nesting pair of bald eagles at the reservoir.
