Only foot and horse travel are allowed. Visitors are required to self-register at the trailheads.Please pick up a Keep the Wilderness Wild brochure at any Forest Service Office for wilderness and Norbeck Wildlife Preserve trail information. Special restrictions apply. Great trail opportunities for hikers and horseback riders outside the Black Elk Wilderness include the following: Trail 32 - Hell Canyon near Custer, SD Trail 93 - Sundance Trails near Sundance, WY Trail 40 - Deerfield Trail in the central hills Trail 50 - Flume Trail near Sheridan Lake (hiking only) Trail 104 - Mickelson Trail Check with the Forest Supervisors office for details on this and other restrictions that apply to the Black Elk Wilderness. REGISTRATION: Groups or individuals entering or being in the Black Elk Wilderness are required to have a completed self-issue registration signed and in possession of the group for each visit. GROUPS: Groups are limped to a combination of 25 persons and saddle/ pack animals. Group sizes of ten or less are recommended. CAMPFIRES: No campfires are allowed in the Black Elk Wilderness. Bring a campstove when staying overnight. USE: Motorized and mechanized equipment is prohibited, including motorbikes, bicycles, baby strollers, carts, hang gliders, and chainsaws. PETS: Dogs must be leashed or under strict voice control. Loose dogs can cause conflicts with wildlife and other users. HIKING: Please don't cut switchbacks or pioneer new trails. HORSE USE: Use certified weed- and seed-free hay and pellets. Scatter manure before you leave. Use highlines or hobbles to tie up stock. Do not restrain horses within 100 feet of water sources. CAMPING: Camp at least 1/4 mile from Harney Peak summit and the Sylvan Lake Trail. Camp at least 100 feet from streams and water sources. SANITATION: To keep our water pure, bury human waste at 6-8 inches deep and 200 feet or further from water sources. TRASH: Please pack out your trash. Help keep our wilderness clear. Harney Peak and Trail #9 from Sylvan Lake are heavily used from May 1 through September 30. Consider this when you plan your trip and use some of the other beautiful trails in the area. |
