Visitor Centers
The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center in Ketchikan is our primary information outlet for the Tongass. It's located in downtown Ketchikan, about two blocks from where the cruise ships tie up and 2.5 miles from the ferry dock. It has exhibits showing the nature and history of Southeast Alaska as well as a trip-planning room to help you plan the rest of your visit - or even your next trip in Southeast!
In Petersburg, the visitor center is in the "old Forest Service building," less than a block from Main Street, three blocks from the harbor, and about a mile from the ferry dock. It, too, has displays and trip planning information.
Thirteen miles out of downtown Juneau you'll find the newly remodeled Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. The very first visitor center built by the Forest Service, it provides a panoramic view of Mendenhall Glacier. From the center, trails lead to view points and to near the glacier face.
