Lower Suntaheen Creek Trail

Map showing parking, trailhead, and lower Suntaheen Creek trail on road 8530-4.

View down lower Suntaheen Creek to where it enters Whitestone Harbor. You can reach the lower Suntaheen trail by following Forest Road 8530 south from Hoonah then turning onto road 8530-4. Adjacent to the parking area a barrier free viewing platform lets you observe Suntaheen Creek and salmon runs while in season. A gravel trail leads down slope passing a small muskeg then through forest before emerging on the estuary of Whitestone Harbor. At low tide, you can follow a wide gravel beach around the shoreline where fishing, nature study, and photography are popular activities. Be alert for brown bears particularly during salmon runs.
