Put-in point: Petersburg

Length: 60 miles (96 km)

Tide-dependent: yes

Major crossings: 2

Route:

  • From Petersburg at high tide N along the coast of Kupreanof Island to the Sukoi Islets.
  • Across Frederick Sound via the islets to mainland. Exposed to northwest wind.
  • NW along Point Agassiz Peninsula to entrance of Thomas Bay. Very strong tidal currents and standing waves at entrance to Thomas Bay when tide is running.
  • Along shoreline around Thomas Bay. Bay is fairly protected but can have strong cold wind blowing down Baird Glacier from N.
  • From Thomas Bay, retrace route back to Petersburg.

Spurt Cove and Cascade Creek cabins available for rent on the route; must be reserved in advance. You can arrange a charter back to Petersburg or paddle back.
