Hubbard Update - July 2006The Hubbard has been advancing and then calving quite a bit the past few months, but in general staying in nearly the same position. The glacier face’s current position is about half of what it was in February and that is something to note. Last year, it started retreating about this time of year and widened significantly by fall, but it has yet to do that. Whether it will or not is of significance for future closures. The gap between the glacier face and Gilbert Point is about half of what it was in February, and that is something to note. Last year, the glacier started retreating about this time, and the gap widened significantly by fall. So far this year, significant seasonal widening of the gap has not occurred. Whether the gap widens or not this season is of significance for future closures. Summary of Hubbard’s Advance 2006

This information is from Bruce Molnia, USGS. The data used to measure the gap distance between Gilbert Point and the nearest face of the Hubbard is from a variety of sources.
There have been indications the moraine may have been observed near the surface or close to the surface of the water near the glacier face.
