Tongass National Forest

Welcome to the Tongass National Forest, America's largest. Located in the southeast panhandle of Alaska, the Tongass contains almost 17 million acres of trees, water, rock, ice, bog, and alpine. It is home to animals ranging from tiny shrews to mighty brown bears and to plants from lowly bog orchids to towering spruce and hemlock. Its waters abound in fish and marine mammals. Its air is clean, washed regularly by the rains that contribute to the abundance of the area. Learn more about the many aspects of the Tongass National Forest as you look through this site.
