George Island Gun Emplacement, Historic Site

During World War II, George Island, on the east side of Cross Sound, housed a 6-inch gun intended to protect the sound from invasion. Today, there remains the gun, with breach removed, pointing down toward the beach. According to Gabe Emerson, local historian:

A World War 2 cannon sits atop a rock outcropping, pointed down toward the beach below.“This gun is located on a small rock outcropping covered with trees, accessible via a collapsed bridge or the beach. Nearby are three rotting wooden buildings, one of which was a latrine, and a small concrete pad which probably held a rangefinding shack. Directly behind the gun is a small, still intact Quonset hut which served as an ammunition magazine (Rather dangerous if the gun ever suffered a direct hit). According to local legend the gun crews would get bored, not having any enemies to shoot at, and would fire at Brady Glacier several miles away.”

This location is not a developed recreation site so requires some effort to locate and visit. As an historic site, it is protected by Federal law, which prohibits removal or damage of any artifacts or objects. Feel free to visit the site, but leave no trace of your visit.
