Alaska Archeology Month - April 2006
Calendar of Events
Alaska Archaeology Month will be celebrated across the state with a series
of free public events.

ANCHORAGE
Saturday, April 1st – 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Alaska Native
Heritage Center
Ninth Annual Alaska Atlatl Fun Throw and Competition, sponsored by the
Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) and the Alaska Office of History
and Archaeology. Come give it a try! Bag yourself a seal or even a wooly
mammoth!
10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.: Fun Throw & Practice.
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.: Atlatl Demonstration & Competition.
Prize awarded for top score.

Documentary film "Kuwóot yas.éin: His Spirit is Looking
Out From the Cave" chronicles the discovery of a 10,000 year-old
campsite at On Your Knees Cave on northern Prince of Wales Island and
the partnerships that developed among Alaska Native people, scientists,
and the Tongass National Forest in the study of this place. Terry Fifield,
Tongass NF archaeologist, will answer questions and provide information
on other current archaeological happenings on Prince of Wales Island.

Center

Public lecture, “Living in Womens Bay: 7,300 Years of Alutiiq Settlement
and Subsistence” Museum curator and archaeologist Patrick Saltonstall
will sum results from a community archaeology excavation conducted in
2005.

Public lecture: “Archaeological Investigations at the North Point
Site” Tongass National Forest archaeologist Jane Smith will present
results of recent archaeological investigations at North Point, an ancient,
partially submerged site.

a tour of the 2,000 year-old Sandy Beach fish traps and rock art.

Public lecture, “Ancient Fish Traps of Southeast Alaska.”
Tongass archeologist Mark McCallum will present an Elderhostel lecture
about 5,000 years of fish trap use, followed by a field trip to the Sandy
Beach site.

Steve Henrikson, Curator of Collections at the Alaska State Museum will
present a lecture, “Artifacts in the State Museum Culturally Affiliated
with Yakutat.”

The Tongass National Forest and the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe are again sponsoring
noted Tlingit weaver Teri Rofkar to share her knowledge of spruce roots
collecting, processing and weaving. The community is invited to participate
with Ms. Rofkar as she collects and processes spruce roots in traditional
ways. She will introduce weaving to interested people. Locations to be
announced.

Public Education Group of the Alaska Anthropological Association and its
sponsoring agencies coordinates Alaska Archaeology Month.
The Bureau of Land Management created the 2006 poster, with assistance
from USDA Forest Service and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium/Division
of Environmental Health & Engineering. Additional assistance provided
by Alaska Office of History and Archaeology and National Park Service.
