Welcome to the El Capitan Cave Tour
Welcome to El Capitan Cave, the longest surveyed cave in Alaska with 12,000 feet of mapped passageway. The cave entrance is located on the northwestern shore of Prince of Wales Island. Exploring El Capitan Cave is a wonderful adventure. A 370-step staircase winds through the rainforest and leads to the cave entrance. For your safety and to protect fragile cave resources, visitors can only explore El Cap on a guided Forest Service tour. From Memorial Day through Labor day, the Tongass National Forest provides free guided tours of El Capitan. Reservations for these tour must be made at the Thorne Bay Ranger District (907-828-3304). We have created this online version of the El Cap Cave tour for those who can't visit Prince of Wales Island. Through these words and images, you can experience the magnificent, yet fragile, beauty of Southeast Alaska. Enjoy your visit to the subterranean treasures of Prince of Wales Island. A glossary defines scientific and technical terms we used when talking about Caves and Karst landscapes.
