Watershed Management Projects
Watershed Education
Many Forest Service employees participate in local school activities
and encourage natural resource management and scientific understanding
in our youth.
Watershed Restoration is
a way of improving streams or hillsides that are not functioning. Some
existing watershed restoration projects include:
- Landslide seeding to initiate vegetation and reduce
erosion
- Riparian thinning to promote regeneration of larger
trees quicker in areas adjacent to the streams
- Stream projects to restore stream processes such
as Fubar Creek in the Harris River Watershed where timber harvest and
roads have altered the sediment regime.
Community Watershed Councils
The Forest Service on Prince of Wales Island actively participates on
local Watershed Councils. Resource specialists have been available for
technical support to local organized watershed councils.
Watershed Assessments
The Tongass National Forest performs watershed assessments and analysis
in conjunction with planning projects to identify cumulative effects
in our watersheds. These assessments identify existing condition, reference
condition, and cumulative effects of those areas under analysis.
Visit the Tongass Schedule
of NEPA Proposed Actions following the Thorne Bay and Craig Ranger
District links for more information.
Watershed Monitoring Projects
The following projects are on-going to monitor and
assess past and current management practices on watershed resources:
- Karst water quality and watershed delineation
- Low flow characteristics
- Temperatures regimes in selected streams
- Precipitation and soils moisture monitoring
