Community Watersheds

Red Bay Lake

At nearly two million acres and the third largest island in the United States, Prince of Wales Island has 15 major watersheds and 453 smaller coastal watersheds.

The high amount of rainfall that occurs in this area provides large volumes of water for many beneficial users. Fish utilize waters in the streams. Soils and vegetation utilize waters on the hillslope. Wildlife benefit from waters along lake shores, streams and coastlines.

Communities benefit from waters that fall into catchments for water sources such as lakes or streams. These waters are generally routed to a treatment facility before they flow through pipes and out to the many faucets in schools, homes, fire hydraunts, and all other residential and business utilities.
