Island Info

The communities of Prince of Wales Island reflect
the diversity of the people and the traditions from which they come.
Several communities exhibit a strong Native American flavor, accentuated
by totem parks in three of these communities. Others center on the
fishing industry and active working harbors, while still others
thrive on a timber-based economy with mills and a wood products
industry.
All the island communities share close ties to the
land and the sea. It is the natural resources
of this coastal rainforest environment that support the culture,
whether it be through subsistence hunting and fishing, commercial
harvest, or sharing the beauty of the environment with visitors.
It is this diversity of culture and experience set in a common appreciation
of the island's natural resources that binds Prince of Wales Island
's culture together.
The federal subsistence program acknowledges the
importance of customary and traditional activities in Alaska with
a different set of fishing and hunting regulations for local residents
in some areas, including Prince of Wales Island. The Forest Service
is one of five Federal agencies that manage the
program
