Summer School Bike Trip
Wouldn't
it be nice to be a kid again, biking through those long summer days?
Five lucky Forest Service employees from the Thorne Bay Ranger District
did just that. In a new cooperative venture with the Southeast Island
School District, The Forest Service helped provide a hands-on look at
the local environment for 25 summer school students.
Students, instructors and 2 volunteering Forest Service employees bicycled
with the kids for a week while learning about the local environment and
resource management issues. Forest 
Service
fish and wildlife biologists, a geologist, and a forester set up outdoor
stations to investigate local fisheries, wildlife, karst and forest health
topics with the students.
Employees and students alike are still talking about this island-wide adventure. It's success has led to continuing collaborative events between the Forest Service and local school districts.
