The SCOPE Program

The Forest Service and Southeast Island School District are working together to build a unique, outdoor education program called SCOPE: Students Classifying, Observing and Probing their Environment. SCOPE unites Forest Service professionals, community volunteers, the School District Administration, a host of dedicated teachers and the students from 9 rural communities in Southeast Alaska in a year of learning, playing and exploring in the local environment.

Forest Service Employees giving watershed demonstration in local school.Activities range from consensus and curriculum building with teachers, School District administrators, and resource management professionals to development of the EcoVan concept and outdoor activities like the Summer School Bike Trip and watershed monitoring and restoration projects. The SCOPE program is funded by Payments to States money earmarked for "forest education."
