Coho in the Classroom!

Forest Service employee and class with aquarium used to teach the lifecycle of coho salmon.Elementary school students in Thorne Bay were introduced to the salmon life cycle by caring for 200 coho fry in a classroom aquarium. Students were responsible for feeding the fish, monitoring water temperature, and maintaining the chemical balance. While watching the salmon develop from eggs to fry over a three-month period, students learned about sources of mortality, effects of habitat quality, and human impacts to fish habitat. The project culminated with a field trip to release the fish into a local stream.
