Coho in the Classroom!

Elementary school students in Thorne Bay were introduced to the salmon life cycle by caring for 200 coho fry in a classroom aquarium. Students were responsible for feeding the fish, monitoring water temperature, and maintaining the chemical balance. While watching the salmon develop from eggs to fry over a three-month period, students learned about sources of mortality, effects of habitat quality, and human impacts to fish habitat. The project culminated with a field trip to release the fish into a local stream.
