Adult salmon
Adult salmon are bright silver during their saltwater stage, darkening only after they enter fresh water to spawn. |
As salmon swim upstream to spawn, they stop eating and darken, and their jaws hook. Once they have spawned, they die, and their carcasses provide nutrients to animals, birds, and the stream. |
