District at a glance:

Location: Chichagof Island, islands to the north, Yakobi Island
Size: 663,329 acres
Wilderness areas: Pleasant, Lemesurier and Inian Islands in Icy Strait;
West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness (northern portion)
Main community: Hoonah, population 850
Proximity to major communities: 40 miles W of Juneau; 80 miles N of Sitka
Access: Charter air service, Alaska Marine Highway ferries

The District office is in the community of Hoonah, jumping off point for visitors to explore our lush rainforest, abundant rivers, bountiful wildlife, and scenic mountains.

The road system gives access to much of Chichagof Island and the chances it offers to enjoy the beauty and bounty of nature. The surrounding waters of Port Fredrick and Icy Strait, with their numerous bays and inlets, offer limitless opportunities for saltwater fishing, setting crab pots, shellfish collecting, observing marine life such as breaching or bubble-feeding humpback whales, other wildlife viewing, and kayaking.
