Fishing Around Hoonah

Weaving through Hoonah Ranger District’s 663,329 acres of temperate rainforest are rivers teaming with salmon and resident fish populations. Beginning with steelhead and Dolly Varden fishing in April and continuing into fall coho fishing until mid-October the river systems around Hoonah are full of activity and freshwater fishing opportunities several months out of the year. While the State of Alaska manages fresh and saltwater fishing and issues sport fishing permits (for fishing regulations go to www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/statewide/reghome.cfm), the Forest Service manages fish habitat.Pink salmon gather in a shallow pool and a strong of 5 nice fish give evidence of a successful day's fishing.

The seas around Chichagof Island are also rich with fish. In fact, very few game fish in Southeast Alaska spend all of their lives in fresh water. Much more common are anadromous fish, which begin and end their lives in fresh water but spend most of their time in the ocean. If salt-water fishing is your game, Hoonah is a good starting point.
