Tlingit Totem Pole

(Brown Bear - Tongass Tribe)

This Yeil ch aak (Raven-Eagle) totem pole was designed in the house post style to represent the Tlingit people of Southeast Alaska. The Eagle and Raven are the two main crest. The sub clans on this totem are the Sun and Frog atop of Raven, Killer Whale Tlingit Chief atop of Eagle, and Wolf Speaker's staff resting on the Bear Clan's bentwood box.

The three Alaska Native tribes had a common cultural, economic and environmental background. They were all hunters and gatherers who lived along the river valleys and the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest, skillfully using the abundant resources of river, sea and forest.
