Schedule of Events

Celebrate the return of migratory birds from Central and South America to the southern panhandle of Alaska. The male Rufous hummingbirds begin arriving Ketchikan in mid-March and are seen at feeders and flowers throughout Ketchikan by mid-April.

Festival events include guided bird hikes, art shows, and activities for children. For more information, call festival headquarters at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center at 907-228-6220.

Hummingbird coloring competition begins The coloring sheets with rules will be distributed at each elementary school. You may also pick up packets at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center Monday - Friday 10a.m. to 3p.m.
5:00 - 7:00p.m. Opening reception & Alaska Hummingbird Festival Juried Art Show Ketchikan Visitors Bureau - Alaskan artists display their works of migratory birds of Alaska. Meet artists and enjoy wine and hor d'oeuvres provided by the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau. Art will be on display M-F 8a.m. -5p.m. through April 15th
7:00 - 8:00p.m. Birding Insight "Big Black Birds in my Backyard: Natural History of the Raven" presented by Evon Zerbetz.

Beginning Birding at Ward Lake

See, hear, and learn the birds found at Ward Lake with Cheryl Fultz. Bring binoculars, water, and wear layers.

Visiting Artist Program Get creative using colored paper to make a bird mosaic with Deanne Teeter. Reservations required.

Discovery Center Learning Center

Live bird presentation by Tammy Sivertsen from the Ketchikan Indian Community Tribal Hatchery and Eagle Center.

  Visit the Hummingbirds at the Discovery Center! Artistic and commemorative feeders on display today through August.

See, hear, and learn about the birds found at Ward Lake, led by Teri Goucher from the Juneau Audubon Society. Bring binoculars, water, and wear layers.
10:00a.m. - 12:00p.m.
Visiting Artist Program Cement Garden Stones with Dawn Rauwolf and Geenah Caraglin. If you'd like, bring your own design materials such as stones, beads, tiles, etc. Reservations required.

Learn about hummingbirds by creating a recycled hummingbird feeder with Brandon Caley. Reservations required.

Investigation Birds

Join Wayne Thompson from the Southeast Alaska Wildlife Center as he showcases live birds and explains their adaptations to youngsters and their families.

With Steve Heinl from ADF&G Meet at the Mountain Point boat ramp. Bring binoculars and water and wear layers.

Visiting Artists Program
Learn about birds and their flight by making, decorating and flying a model airplane with Melissa Edwards. Participants can earn a fun patch!
1:00 - 3:00p.m.
Investigation Birds
Preschool children and their parents will enjoy this interactive program about birds by Faith Duncan. Reservations required.

Hummingbird Coloring Competition Ends
Turn in your sheets to the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. Winning entries will be announced Thursday April 28 and be on display through the end of May.
