Wildlife

Sitka black-tailed deer.

Sitka black-tailed deer.

Although bear viewing is the primary objective for many visitors, Admiralty Island explodes with life in the spring ... and more than just bears are present. As the snow recedes, the new plant life attracts wildlife of all varieties.

Sitka black-tailed deer, beavers, otter, and marten are just a few of the species that may catch your eye.

Admiralty Island is known to the native Tlnigit people as Kootznoowoo, meaning "fortress of the bears".

One of the best places to view these bears is at the Pack Creek Brown Bear Viewing Area.

Forest Service rangers are present from June 1 through September 10 to ensure the safety of both the bears and their human visitors.

Below iis a list of mammals that can be found on Admiralty or in the surrounding waters.

Wolves have not historically been known to occur on Admiralty Island. Recent observations suggest that wolves may have crossed over to the island, probably from mainland populations.

The public is urged to contact the Forest Service with any information they have concerning suspected wolf or other canine sightings.
