Location: 31 miles (50 km) SE of Wrangell on mainland shore at Anan Bay across Ernest Sound from SE corner of Wrangell Island.

Access: By boat or float plane 
Terrain: Sitka spruce, western hemlock, scattered cedar. Gentle slope from cabin to beach. Slopes adjacent to cabin gentle to moderate. Nearby lagoon is an intertidal area.

Water may be available from seasonal creek behind cabin. Treat all water before using.
What to bring: #1 fuel oil, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and fire starter. It's a good idea to bring your own water.
More information: Cabin overlooks Anan Bay. Due to bear activity, this cabin has no outdoor cooler box for food storage, or outdoor cooking grill. Store and cook all food inside cabin. During peak bear-viewing season (July 5 to August 25), day-use permit needed to visit nearby Anan Wildlife Observatory. Cabin reservation "holds" 4 permits, which must be purchased in addition to cabin fee if you choose to go to observatory.
Special features:
  • Due to bear activity, the following regulations are in place from June 15 to September 15:
    • Areas off the Anan Trail and outside the immediate vicinity of the cabin are closed to foot traffic.
    • No food, including beverages other than water, is allowed on the trail or at the wildlife observatory.
    • No dogs are allowed.
    • Fishing from the shore is allowed at the Anan trailhead only. All other off-trail areas accessing water are closed during this time.
  • Safety Notes: Close encounters with bears using the Anan Trail are not infrequent. Trail behavior suggestions include:
    • Talk or make noise along the trail to alert bears of your presence.
    • Stay in tight groups.
    • Do NOT approach the bears.

Anan Creek Trail from cabin ½ mile (1 km) to trailhead at entrance to lagoon. Trail continues ½ mile (1 km) to Anan Wildlife Observatory.

Excellent black & brown bear, harbor seal, bald eagle, various gull viewing (July - Aug.) Note: Check with Alaska Department of Fish and Game for bear hunting closure area.

Steelhead (April - May), cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden, pink salmon (July - Aug). June 15 through September 15: access for fishing from shore at trailhead only.

Anan Wildlife Observatory: Open log style structure with two entryways and viewing ports, and two level deck offer views of creek, falls and visiting wildlife.

Feature: Forest Service Interpreters on duty at trailhead and observatory to provide current information on bear safety, trail conditions and bear activity (July - Aug.).
