Description: 16'x16' A-frame cabin with sleeping loft reached by vertical ladder
Location: 10 miles (16 km) south of Sitka on Baranof Island
Longitude:
-135.1327778

Latitude:
56.92388889

Suggested USGS topo map:
Port Alexander D-4; Sitka A-4
Access: 15-minute float plane flight from Sitka; boat to the head of Silver Bay then hike 6-mile (9.6-km), very difficult, Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake trail. Difficult access by very small, light skiff or kayak also possible at west end of lake from Redoubt Bay (at base of falls) across a 100-foot (30-meter) portage.
Terrain: Forested mountains rise from cabin near sea level nearly 3,500 feet (1065 m) to snowfields and dramatic granite cirques.
Facilities:
  • 1 double plywood bunk
  • 2 single plywood bunks
  • Sleeping loft
  • Table and benches
  • Wood stove
  • Cooking counter
  • Outdoor screened cooler box
  • Broom
  • Outhouse toilet
  • Axe or splitting maul
  • Skiff and oars (motor and personal flotation devices not included)
Water available from lake or nearby inlet stream. Treat all water before using.
What to bring: Personal flotation devices (pfd), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter, raingear and rubber boots. It's a good idea to bring your own water.
More information: Occasional cold weather conditions of mid-winter can freeze lake and delay air or boat arrivals and departures. Caution is necessary by planes maneuvering across shallowly covered sandbar at cabin approach.

Provided firewood may be in short supply at any time of year.

Square-bowed skiff (rowboat) provided is small but heavy. Uses long-shaft 2-10 hp outboard motor. Redoubt Lake can become quite windy and make rowing extremely difficult. Each person in skiff should have Coast Guard approved pfd. Be sure plug is in before launching boat. Please tie skiff well up on shore and pull plug before leaving so boat does not fill with rain water.

DO NOT leave any food when vacating cabin. Pack out what you bring in.

Special features: Cabin is popular recreational area for Sitka. Mountains, numerous waterfalls visible the length of the lake.

Trailhead for Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake trail begins just beyond woodshed.

Good rainbow, cutthroat and Dolly Varden fishing. Try fishing where silt bottom of nearby inlet stream suddenly drops off at head of lake. Sockeye fishing mid-July to mid-August, coho salmon late August through mid-September.

Deer and brown bear plentiful. Deer hunting in season.
