Baranof Lake Cabin

Baranof Island

Capacity: 6 Access: floatplane
Stove type: Wood
Rowboat: Yes Activities: fishingSkiff
Rental fee: $35 per night
Season of use: June to October
Description: Rustic 12' x 14' Pan Abode cabin.
Location: 20 air miles (32 km) east of Sitka on Baranof Lake on the east side of Baranof Island.
Longitude:
-134.8938889

Latitude:
57.06805556

Suggested USGS topo map:
Sitka A-3
Access: Float plane 25 minutes from Sitka. In low clouds, flying time can double, as flights must go around the island.
Terrain: Small, sandy beach in front of cabin; mountain ridges gradually rise to over 3000 feet (915 m) elevation on either side of 145-foot-high (44 m) lake.
Facilities:
  • 2 double plywood bunks
  • 2 single plywood bunks
  • Table and benches
  • Wood stove
  • Cooking counter
  • Cupboard
  • Outdoor screened cooler box
  • Broom
  • Outhouse toilet
  • Axe or splitting maul
  • Skiff and oars (No motor or personal flotation devices provided)
Water is available from the lake or nearby inlet stream. Treat all water before using.
What to bring: Sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter, personal flotation devices (pfd) and rubber boots. It's a good idea to bring your own water.
More information: Lake is generally ice free (suitable for a float plane to land) from June 1 to October 1.

The cabin is not maintained during the winter and, though generally provided, firewood may be in short supply at any time of the year.

DO NOT leave food behind when vacating cabin. Pack out all gear that you bring.

Square-bowed skiff (rowboat) provided is small but heavy. Takes long-shaft outboard motor (2-10 hp), not provided. Each person using the skiff should have a Coast Guard approved pfd. Be sure plug is in before launching boat. Please tie skiff well up on shore and pull plug before leaving so boat does not fill with rain water.
Special features: Remote mountain cabin nestled within a stand of spruce at southwestern edge of the 2.5-mile (3.25 km) long greenish-blue Baranof Lake. Sound of rushing water prevails as Baranof River enters lake in view of cabin and beautiful waterfall cascades over steep slopes across lake.

Thick vegetation along shoreline and on mountain slopes makes fishing from and hiking along the shore impossible.

Warm Springs Bay and the community of Baranof Warm Springs just beyond the eastern shores of the lake.

Brown bear frequent the area.

Cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout fishing late July to late August, especially near inlet streams.
