Season of use: Year-round

Location: 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Sitka and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Whale Bay on the southcentral portion of Baranof Island.

56.70527778

Suggested USGS topo map:
Port Alexander C-3
Access: Float plane 30 minutes from Sitka. From lake shore, 150 feet (45 m) along a narrow footpath and boardwalk through a lightly wooded area to the cabin.
Terrain: Northern shore of alpine lake (800 feet or 240 meters elevation), at the edge of a muskeg area near an inlet stream to Avoss Lake.
Facilities:
  • 1 double plywood bunk
  • 1 single plywood bunk
  • Sleeping loft
  • Table and benches
  • Oil stove (uses #1 diesel, not provided)
  • Outdoor screened cooler box
  • Broom
  • Outhouse toilet
  • Cooking counter
  • Skiff and oars (motor and life jackets not included)
Water is available from the lake or nearby inlet stream. Treat all water before using.
What to bring: #1 diesel fuel (10 gallons for a 3-day stay), personal flotation devices (pfd), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and fire starter, rain gear and boots. It's a good idea to bring your own water.
More information: Generally the lake is ice-free (suitable for landing a float plane) from mid-June to mid-September. Poor weather conditions can arise quickly and may delay flight arrivals and departures.

The square-bowed skiff (rowboat) provided is small but heavy. A long-shaft outboard motor in the 2-10 hp range is highly recommended for use with the skiff provided. Each person using the skiff should have a Coast Guard approved pfd. Be sure the plug is in before launching the boat. Please tie the skiff well up on the shore and pull the plug before leaving so the boat does not fill with rain water.

DO NOT leave food behind when vacating cabin. Pack out all gear that you bring.
Special features: Many streams and small channels flow through the surrounding area. A wide array of wildflowers bloom in spring and summer. Many great photography opportunities!

Fair fishing in Avoss Lake for Dolly Varden and rainbow trout July to September.

Deer and brown bear are plentiful in the area. Deer and mountain goat hunting is possible in season. This area is remote, rugged, and surrounded by steep mountainous terrain. Plan hunting trips accordingly.
