Description: Rustic 16' x 24' Pan Abode cabin built in 1992 by Forest Service timber prep and administrative crews for field housing. When logging was complete, cabin became available for recreation purposes.
Location: 30 air miles (48 km) or 50 boat miles (80 km) north of Sitka at the mouth of Appleton Cove of Rodman Bay off Peril Strait

Access:  2-hour boat ride or a 25-minute float plane ride from Sitka.
Terrain: South-facing and flat shoreline amid a tall dense hemlock-spruce forest.
Facilities:
  • 1 double-wide plywood bunk

  • Oil stove (uses #1 diesel, not provided)

Water is available from the stream behind the cabin. Treat all water before using.
What to bring: #1 diesel fuel (generally 10 gallons for a three-day stay), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, and fire starter. Rubber boots are recommended. It's a good idea to bring your own water.
More information: Occasionally winter temperatures can freeze the cove, preventing access during those times. Mooring buoy available on a first-come, first served basis for boat anchorage. Buoy is available either to cabin users or general forest users.

No firewood is available for campfires at this cabin.

DO NOT leave food behind when vacating the cabin. Pack out all gear that you bring to the cabin. This cabin is NOT maintained during the winter.

Cabin built in 1992 by Forest Service timber prep and administrative crews for field housing; became available for recreation use when logging was complete.

Special features: Deer hunting in season.

Wildlife and waterfowl viewing. Brown bear frequent the area.

Pink, chum and coho salmon and Dolly Varden fishing.

Hiking, mountain biking and ATV opportunities on logging roads (when there is no active logging). However, use caution as some culverts on these roads have been pulled, leaving deep depressions.
