Access: 15 miles (24 km) by float plane or 25 miles (40 km) by boat from Petersburg. 
Terrain: Hilly along eastern shore of Portage Bay, flat and rolling south and west of bay, with Portage Mountain rising to 3,577' (1090 m) in background.
Facilities:
  • 2 single bunks
  • Wooden table and benches
  • Oil heater (#1 stove oil only)
  • Pit-type outhouse
Water is available from a creek 100 feet south of the cabin. Treat all water before using.
What to bring: #1 diesel fuel, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter and rubber boots. It's a good idea to bring your own water.
More information: Stove for heating purposes only; burns #1 heating oil.
Special features: Excellent halibut fishing in mouth of Portage Bay. Coho and , pink salmon, steelhead, trout fishing in Portage Creek. Black bear, waterfowl, grouse hunting. Primitive 10½ mile (17 km) Portage Mountain Trail connects cabin, Petersburg Lake cabin and Salt Chuck East cabin, though Goose Cove south of bay.
