Windfall Lake

Description: This is a Pan Abode style cabin, 14 feet x 16 feet plus a large deck.

Location: On the east side of windfall Lake, 17 miles northwest of Juneau. The trailhead is at the end of Herbert River Road, 26 Mile Glacier Highway. Longitude: -134.7227778; Latitude: 58.50916667

Water is available from Windfall Lake. Treat all water before using. Bring your own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags and fire extinguisher. The cabin is heated by a propane wall furnace, with propane furnished by the Forest Service. Wood is not provided for the wood stove.Bears frequent the area.

Additional Comments: Cabin access is via 3.3 mile windfall Lake Trail, a flat trail which connects with the Montana Creek Trail, or by floatplane or snowmachine. A large deck provides for outside activities adjacent to the cabin.

Special Features: The lake has salmon, small trout, beavers, and waterfowl. Fishing in Windfall Creek and Windfall Lake. Check Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations. Skis or snowshoes are recommended in winter. Cross-country skiing is good in winter, with undeveloped trail route to Spaulding Meadows (map and compass are recommended). Note: Cabin is open to the public as a warming shelter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rental Fee: $35 per night.
