

Description: This is a log chalet, 15 feet x 12 feet.
Location: 13 miles northwest of Juneau near Auke Bay. Trailhead is at 12.3-Mile Glacier Highway. Longitude: -134.6966667; Latitude: 58.4094444
Terrain: Cabin is located in a subalpine meadow 1550 feet above the Mendenhall Valley.

Closest water in summer is Auk Nu Creek, 3/8 mile down the trail. Treat all water before using. Bring your own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and fire starter. This cabin contains a wood stove. Wood is not provided, so you must bring your own if you wish to use the stove. Cabin is heated by a propane wall furnace. Propane is supplied. Bears frequent the area.
Additional Comments: Access is via hiking, crosscountry skiing, or snowshoeing over 3-mile partially planked Auke Nu Trail through muskeg, with a 1500-foot elevation gain. Maximum stay is limited to 2 nights. Cabin will be closed from July 30 to August 30, 2001.
Special Features: Cross-country skiing is excellent in winter, with close access to Spaulding Meadows and an undeveloped trail to Peterson Lake cabin (map and compass are recommended). Skis or snowshoes are recommended in winter. Great views of Juneau, Chilkat Mountains, Admiralty Island and numerous ice field peaks. Note: Cabin is open to public as a warming shelter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Rental Fee: $35 per night.
