Admiralty Cove Cabin

Admiralty Cove cabin shares a clearing in tall evergreens with a CCC shelter.

Description: This is a typical Pan Abode cabin with an oil stove for heat. It has sleeping space for 4 to 6 people. An old CCC shelter is on site providing an additional covered area.

Location: The cabin is next to a fishing stream in Admiralty Cove, a small open cove within Young Bay on the northern tip of the island, ¼ mile (400 m) up a trail from saltwater. Longitude: -134.55; Latitude: 58.18333333

Access: Access is by float plane or boat. It is about a ¼-hour flight or a 20-minute boat ride from Juneau and requires a 13'+ incoming tide. There is a large tide flat in Admiralty Cove. Much of the cove goes dry as the tide recedes. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this.

Terrain: The cabin rests on a level bench overlooking Admiralty Creek and a large grassy tidal meadow.

Facilities:
  • 2 single wooden bunks
  • 2 double wooden bunks
  • Oil stove (uses #1 stove oil, NOT provided)
  • Table and benches
  • Cooking counter
  • Broom
  • Outhouse

The water source is poor. Admiralty Creek has a tide water influx at high tides. Treat all water before using. Bring your own #1 stove oil, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, and fire starter. Please follow the oil stove directions carefully.

Special Features: You are in brown bear country. Bears frequent the area and trail particularly during salmon runs July through August. In addition to fishing, popular activities include wildlife viewing (brown bear, deer, and waterfowl can often be seen in the nearby area), berry picking and beach combing. The Admiralty Cove-Young Lake trail is a 4½ mile trail that departs from the cabin and ends at the North Young Lake cabin. It is a relatively flat trail and follows the creek at each end of the trail. The round trip hike can be fairly strenuous when conditions are very wet.

Rental Fee: $35 per night.

Suggested USGS topo map: Juneau A-2.
