Tongass Futures Roundtable
The Tongass National Forest is an active member of the Tongass Futures Roundtable (TFR). Active since 2006, TFR is a collective of “a diverse group of stakeholders long involved in the Tongass [in order] to discuss how to incorporate our economic, cultural, and ecological values in public policy issues throughout the region.” TFR discussions range across a breadth of topics, including timber harvesting, young growth opportunities, the role of Native Alaskans in the region, restoration, and other economic opportunities in the region such as mariculture and alternative energy projects.
TFR convenes four times per year, rotating through communities across Southeast Alaska. Although the Forest Service is deeply involved in TFR—the Regional Forester, Tongass Forest Supervisor, and Tongass Deputy Forest Supervisor all have seats, and several staff are active on subcommittees—the agency does not lead, facilitate or sponsor/pay for TFR functions. Instead, the agency is one player among the many organizations seated at the table.
Ultimately, TFR members meet with a shared intention: to “work together to achieve a long-term balance of healthy and diverse communities, vibrant economies, responsible use of resources -including timber, while maintaining the natural values and ecological integrity of the forest.” If you are interested in learning more about TFR, please take a look at the website: www.tongassfutures.net.
