Fire Program Overview

Volunteer Fire Assistance

Goals

Program Description

This program is authorized by Section 10(b)3 of the Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act of 1978 (PL 95-313) as amended by the Forest Stewardship Act of 1990 (PL 101-624), also known as the 1990 Farm Bill. This program provides financial assistance to organize, train, and equip rural volunteer fire departments in towns or a service area with a population of less than 10,000. It pays 50 percent of the cost of basic items to provide adequate fire and personal safety equipment, provide training, and to organize new fire departments in unprotected communities. The program is managed by the Alaska Division of Forestry to help established volunteer fire departments meet basic national standards for protective clothing, training, and safety requirements.
