Adaptive Management & Monitoring
Regions 1 and 4, Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS)
FY01 Progress Report and FY02 Plans- October 1, 2001
Project Category: Watershed, Soils, and Riparian
Project Title: Monitoring Effectiveness of Postfire Rehabilitation Treatments and Salvage Logging at Small Watershed Scales
Project Leader: Dr. Peter Robichaud
Participating Research Contacts: Dr. William Elliot
Participating Forests/Grassland Contacts: Jeff Bruggink, Bruce Sims
Funds - Total Project Cost and Timeframe (1-5 years):
$473,000
2001: $183,500
Carryover: $105,500
Funds were spent from various sources in the monitoring site in FY 2001 due to the delay in obtaining funds, thus some carryover occured.
2002: $205,500
2003-2005: $84,000
Progress in 2001: One paired sub-watershed site was installed after the Fridley Fire, Gallatin NF, Region 1. This consisted of a 25 ac contour-felled log treated watershed and a 25 ac control watershed with no treatment. A sediment storage area, flume, and complete weather station were installed. The contour-felled logs were cut and placed by local fire crews. We measured their volume and evaluated them for meeting desired installation specifications.
Two other fires were visited for potential sites. These were the Mollie Fire, Uinta NF, Region 4 and Moose Fire, Flathead NF, Region 1. No suitable sites were found due to limited access or local constraints on equipment location. Additionally, Montana Department of Lands properties (Moose Fire) were visited and no suitable sites were located. They are interested in the salvage logging effects of this project.
Plans for 2002: Continue monitoring Fridley Fire site.
Identify additional potential sites during the 2002 fire season and install monitoring equipment.
Products and/or tech transfer expected in 2002: Informally disseminate monitoring results to BAER teams and Forest personnel as data becomes available. A prototype web site will be developed providing information on research findings and BAER treatment effectiveness.
