Defining the Effects of Stand-Replacing
Wildfire on Stream Ecosystems

Adaptive Management and Monitoring
Regions 1 and 4 – Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS)
FY 01 Progress Report and FY 02 Plans

Project Category:   Watershed Soils and Riparian

Project Title:   Development of indicators and monitoring approaches to define the effects of stand replacing wildfire on stream ecosystems

Project Leader:    Jim Clayton

Participating Research Contacts:   Bruce Rieman, Jack King, Charlie Luce, Jason Dunham

Participating Forest Contacts:   Pat Green, Nick Gerhardt (Nezperce NF); Dave Burns (Payette NF), Kathy Geier-Hayes (Boise NF).

Total Project Cost and Timeframe:   $141,120 over 5 years.
    2001: $0 spent (Adaptive Mgt./Monitoring funds); Carryover: $141,120

Progress in 2001:   We met with collaborators from the three participating NF's to explore which site attributes should be considered in selecting candidate streams for study. These discussions included a variety of site variables including drainage area, channel geometry, prior geomorphic and lithologic influences that would constrain sediment delivery, available fire histories, etc. This meeting was held in McCall on May 29. At this meeting we asked the NF collaborators to provide, within two months, a list of candidate areas based on the selection criteria on which we all agreed. A second meeting was held in McCall early in August to review the selected areas. In late August and early September we took flights over the candidate areas to establish that prior management activity, fire history evidence, and topography were suitable. Based on those flights, four of us took an 8-day field trip, visiting 10 streams to refine our proposed sampling methodology. We are still looking for suitable recent burn sites. Over the winter we will refine our study plan based on this year's field experience.

Plans for 2002:   We will initiate sampling in the summer of 2002 from the candidate sites selected this year. Jim Clayton will retire this winter, and a new leader for this project will be selected from the group listed above under "Participating Research Contacts."

Technology Transfer Plans:   Project status updates including a study plan synopsis, selected watersheds, watershed attributes, and sampling status will be added to the website that Kerry Overton is developing.
