Prairie Grasslands
The Lewis and Clark Expedition first passed through this area on
April 17, 1805. Clark named this area "the birnt hills" due to the
appearance of scorched rocks on the hillsides. While Clark originally
thought these rocks to be volcanic, he later realized burning coal
seams were responsible for heating these rocks to great temperatures.
On their way home, Lewis's party arrived just after noon on August
11, 1806. While hunting, Cruzatte accidentally mistook Lewis for
an elk and shot him. After treating Lewis, they continued downstream,
where they met up with Clark's party on August 12 at Reunion Bay
in Mountrail County.
Today
Don't miss this opportunity to experience the prairie of eastern
Montana and western North Dakota. From the overlook, one can see
endless miles of prairie stretching into the distance, and watch
the Missouri River wind its way out of sight. Across the river from
the overlook are the "birnt hills", which look just as Clark described
them 200 years ago.
Location
The Birnt Hills Overlook interpretive site is approximately 30
miles north of Watford City, North Dakota. Take State Highway 1806
to Tobacco Garden Bay Resort. Turn east on McKenzie County Road
50. Drive approximately 2 miles on this gravel road to a parking
area. Walk the.25 mile trail to the top of the bluff overlooking
the Missouri River.
Facilities
The privately owned Tobacco Gardens Campground and resort is found
near the end of Highway 1806. The Birnt Hills interpretive site
is new and is scheduled to be open to the public in the spring of
2004.
