An Invitation to Explore US!
The 200th Anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition's journey across what is now the Northern Region of the Forest Service (North Dakota, Montana and Idaho), began on October 14, 2004.

On that date, 200 years ago, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their "Corps of Discovery" were pushing up the Missouri River through the homeland of the Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa Nations.

They spent the winter of 1804 at Ft. Mandan near present day Washburn, North Dakota.

The following spring, they launched their small fleet into uncharted territory and into the history books. Their portage of the Great Falls and crossing of the Rocky Mountains in 1805 and 1806 proved more exciting and challenging than they could every have imagined!

When the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the mountains of present-day Montana and Idaho in 1805, the country was so rugged and confusing they needed native guides to lead the way.

Vast stretches of this big country are still as wild as when Lewis and Clark saw it. Grizzly bears, wolves, elk, and moose still roam freely. High mountain peaks rise sharp and challenging, rivers run fast and clear, and dense forests blanket the hillsides.

200 years later, numerous commemorative activities and opportunities to re-live their adventure are taking place across North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2005 and 2006.
