Recreational ActivitiesCampgrounds, Picnic Areas & Group Use AreasThe Helena National Forest has developed campgrounds and day use areas on all three of its Ranger Districts. Some are located adjacent to paved highways, and others are located in more isolated or remote areas. Access to some of the recreation sites may be restricted during the early spring and late fall due to snow and road conditions. The stay limit on the Forest is 14 days and unless noted, everything is on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are not any public telephones or supplies available at the campgrounds. For additional information, please contact the local Ranger District.
All groups over 75 individuals must be authorized under a special use permit. Interested applicants must consider issues such as: toilets, parking, drinking water, campfires and litter removal.
The Aspen Grove Picnic Area and the Moose Creek Campground are utilized as Reserve Sites for group gatherings on the Lincoln District. Pine Grove is used for large group gatherings but can't be reserved.
The only developed site on the Townsend District capable of accommodating large groups(25-35 people) is Skidway Campground. This site can not be reserved.
