Projects & PlansFinal Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) Noxious Weed Treatment ProjectOn the Helena National Forest, about 23,000 acres and nearly 200 miles of road are infested with noxious weeds. Noxious weeds crowd out native plants and can cause a decrease in wildlife forage, a reduction in species diversity, and an increase in soil erosion and overland flow. An estimated 338,000 acres of the Helena NF are currently susceptible to weed invasion. Damage from noxious weeds is increasing due to their expanding populations; spread will continue if aggressive action is not taken to control weed populations. A Draft Environmental Impact Statement was issued in October 2003. The Helena National Forest proposed to treat weeds on approximately 23,000 acres of National Forest System lands over the next 12 years and to include additional treatment tools including aerial application of herbicides. The FEIS was recently completed and a Record of Decision, covering a portion of the Forest, was signed on May 10, 2006. The Noxious Weed Treatment FEIS can be viewed below. The FEIS and Record of Decision (ROD) are also available for review at all Helena National Forest Offices and at public libraries in Lincoln, Helena, Boulder, and Townsend. They are also available in both printed and electronic format (Compact Disc) upon request.
