North Belts Travel Planning

The Helena National Forest reinitiated the North Belts travel management planning process in February of 2003. This project includes the northern part of the Big Belt Mountains and the Dry Range. The North Belts travel plan proposed action and existing condition alternatives were presented in a scoping document in February 2003. Through a scoping process three additional alternatives were developed. The proposed action, existing condition, and three additional alternatives were analyzed in preparation of a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) in July 2003. Following a 45 day comment period on the DEIS, the team developed a sixth alternative considered the prefered alternative. All six alternatives were analyzed in preparation of a final environmental impact statement (FEIS).

The final environmental impact statement has been completed and is available for review (see links below). A Record of Decision is expected in the near future.
