Fire - Employment Information

Each year the Helena National Forest hires temporary seasonal employees for the forest's fire crews. These positions require applicants to be physically conditioned for the job, which is arduous work with possible stressful and extended shifts. The Helena National Forest operates fire crews in the communities of Helena, Townssend and Lincoln. Both wildland fire engines and handcrews are staffed each summer.

Applicant Information

The Helena National Forest uses the Nationwide Temporary Employment hiring process. All applications are submitted using the Avue Digital Services website. All fire positions are listed as Forestry Technician and use the GS pay grade. Apply early as most fire crews hire their summer employees during the winter and spring. New applicants should refer to the instructions and links below to begin the application process.

How To Apply

• Create a personal profile on the Avue Digital Services website
• Decide if you would prefer to work in Helena, Townsend or Lincoln
• Contact the fire crew leaders at the locations you are willing to work at
• Discuss job information, application deadline and ask for the Announcement Number for the position
• Temporary Vacancy Announcement Numbers can also be found at the Nationwide Temporary Employment website
• Return to the Avue Digital Services website and login to your account
• Select "Job Search"
• Select tab "Search by Filters" and scroll down to the "Announcement Number" section
• Enter the Announcement Number for the position you are applying for and select "Find Jobs"
• Select the job under "Vacancy" [Example of job listing: Forestry Technician (Helitack)]
• Review the Job Posting Information and then select "Apply Now" when ready to create an application
• It is important to select the correct location for the position, if unsure of the proper location contact the crew supervisor

The United States Forest Service allows students who are currently enrolled in school to be easily hired for summer employment. Students interested in fire employment should contact the fire crew leaders at their preferred ranger district. Let the fire crew leader know you are a student hire.
