PROJECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Accomplishments included:
Replacement of 3.5 miles of old jack-leg and other fence with let-down and 3-wire “elk-friendly” fence. The project proposal was for 5.5 miles of fence. One landowner decided not to be a cooperator in the replacement of the boundary fence between USFS land and his private land (2 miles). Therefore the project is completely done.
COOPERATING AGENCIES AND/OR CONSERVATION GROUPS, LANDOWNERS ETC.
Contributors included:
PROJECT MEDIA COVERAGE:
(Please send to RMEF news releases, in-house publications, newspaper and
magazine articles, etc.)
Enclosed.
RMEF PUBLICATIONS INFORMATION:
(Please send to RMEF color photo slides and or photo prints, black and
white photographs, graphics, etc.)
Enclosed.
PROJECT RESULT ACTIONS:
(List practices implemented as a result of project, e.e. area rested from grazing for 2 yrs, season recommendations revised based on new distributions data received from project, etc.)
The grazing permittees found out the RMEF is a great partner and that local members were more than willing to roll up their sleeves and help out their neighbors. We learned why the old fence was a jack leg; it is extremely difficult to pound posts and set braces in this rocky country! I’m not sure the contractor will bid on another project in the Elkhorn Mountains!
MONITORING IN PLACE: (Please list updates, reports, photopoint
follow-up etc. RMEF can expect in the future)
The fence will be maintained by the grazing permittees. Either the permittees
or volunteers will see to the “let down” and put up of the
fence in the fall and the spring.
