Land Stewardship Demonstration Contracts USDA Forest Service, Northern Region |
| Land Stewardship Contracts are a set of tools that are best suited for accomplishing land stewardship projects. These projects are focused on achieving desired future resource conditions rather than meeting assigned output targets, and contribute to the development of sustainable rural communities through: 1) restoring and maintaining healthy forest ecosystems, and 2) providing a source of income and employment opportunities to local residents. |
| Section 347 of the 1999 Appropriations Bill provides authorization for the Forest Service to enter into 28 agency-wide land stewardship contract demonstration projects. These demonstration projects allow the Forest Service to combine procurement contracts and timber sale contracts to more efficiently accomplish ecosystem restoration. Of these 28 projects, nine are authorized to occur within the Northern Region. | |
