Clearwater National Forest
FIREWOOD
Personal use firewood permits are available to individuals at any Clearwater
NF office. A permit costs $5.00 per cord with a minimum purchase of 4 cords
and a maximum of 12 cords. Permits are valid from the date sold
until March 31st of the following year.
Personal use firewood permits authorize an individual to cut and remove dead trees and logs from National Forest and BLM lands. Firewood cutting, or related disturbance, is not allowed near any running stream, pond, lake, or wet areas to protect water quality and fish habitat and is not allowed within 300 feet of any fish-bearing stream.
Cutting and hauling firewood for your personal use at home is prohibited one-quarter mile on either side of the Lolo Motorway (Road 500) or the historic trails that wind through the Lolo Trail Corrridor. More information on firewood cutting is provided with the permit or you can read more in this brochure. It is important to note that firewood cut under personal use permits cannot be sold.
BERRIES,
MUSHROOMS, BEARGRASS, HERBS
Collecting small quantities of these and similar products for personal use does
not require a permit. The personal use limit on huckleberries is 30 gallons
per season.
Commercial gathering (for resale or large quantities) does require a permit and payment of a fee. Inquire at the appropriate Ranger District for information on collecting areas, permits and requirements.
Mushrooms - Please view our 2011 Mushroom Guide. A free use mushroom harvesting permit is required to gather mushrooms for personal use on national forest land. The permits are also valid for collecting mushrooms in the Idaho portion of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Permits are available at national forest offices and some local businesses.
Commercial harvesting may be allowed on the Clearwater National Forest. Contact the Forest at (208) 476-4541.
