Description: Under conditions simulating fireline operations, 117 helicopter flights were made at night over mountain areas in southern California. The trials indicated that such flights, carrying passengers and cargo, can be made safely if (a) the night operation is well planned, (b) the helicopter is in excellent condition, (c) adequate lighting and guidance equipment are provided and used; and (d) the pilot and crew are well trained.
