Current Emphases, Studies, Projects

  • Forest Biomass Energy Life Cycle Assessment

This project will model the environmental, economic, and social costs and benefits of using biomass from forest thinning projects to generate electricity. One approach for identifying and quantifying these costs and benefits is through a life cycle assessment. A life cycle assessment models the economic and environmental impacts associated with a product, process, or activity by identifying energy and materials used and wastes released to the environment. Decision makers can use LCA models to evaluate opportunities to modify these impacts.

  • Western Utilization and Marketing Project

Assessment of over 200 Forest Service funded projects intended to increase the use and marketing of lower value woody material removed as a result of hazardous fuels reduction and forest restoration activities. The goal of the inventory and analysis project is to provide more robust tools to the Forest Service, its partnership agencies, and its publics to improve program implementation and effectiveness. Results of this inventory and analysis project are expected to help program coordinators target funds more effectively, coordinate their program assets with other funding mechanisms, and identify technical transfer opportunities and partnerships.
