Topic
California Spotted Owl Demographics Meta-Analysis
The Pacific Southwest Research Station sponsored a workshop in
July of 2001 to rigorously
examine the body of demographic data collected on California spotted
owls since 1992. All field researchers involved in this work, as
well as a group of biostatisticians, were assembled for this task.
The primary focus of the demographic studies is assessment of three
principal vital rates of owl populations; adult survival, fecundity,
and finite rate of population change. The meta-analysis followed
rigorous a priori analysis protocols, derived through extensive
discussion and consensus among the workshop participants about the
most scientifically defensible analytical methods to be used in
the meta-analysis. The report has undergone a statistical review
by statisticians from USDA-Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research
Station, Rocky Mountain Research Station, and Pacific Northwest
Research Station, and a peer-review by three scientists on the American
Ornithologists' Union Conservation Committee. All review comments
(included in the appendices) have been considered by the authors.
