Ecology and Management of Western Forests Influenced by Mediterranean Climate

Overview

The work unit is dedicated to the scientific basis and understanding of how forest management practices affect composition, growth, and development of forest vegetation. Scientists are investigating how site characeristics, soil factors, and soil processes interact to control forest productivity. Also under investigation, are the effects of fire, insects, pathogens, and other disturbance factors on sustainability of forest ecosystems of northern California and the Sierra Nevada range. The Redding unit is also developing analytical tools to integrate knowledge of forest ecosystems into effective forest management decisons. In addition to contributing to studies within assigned problem areas, scientists at the Redding Silviculture Laboratory are also involved in a number of interdisciplinary research projects.
